What documents should I keep on the boat?

I’m trying to figure out what paperwork I need to keep onboard the boat (ie. title, USCG documentation, etc.) Which documents should be copies and which should be originals?

Documentation must be original, not a photocopy. Original Ships Station License should be on the boat, local registration paperwork/stickers should be on board, original fishing licenses and personal identification should be on the boat/persons aboard. Ok to have copies of insurance and towing plans.

If you are traveling internationally with a pet, you will need the original copies of their shots, certifications, and receipts onboard.

Boat documentation and personal identification also needs to be original. But keeping copies of those documents in a separate place onboard is smart.

We found it very helpful to make copies of all our ship and personal documents for clearing in and out. We keep our originals in clear waterproof zip-top document folders. Then we also have a stack of photocopies premade. When clearing in or out we “showed” the original and immediately handed over a photocopy (helped keep the vital papers form wandering off). If you have an official ship’s stamp to plop on that copy everybody gets giddy. Customs officials LOVE stamps!
